Alexandra O’Mara

Alex is a seasoned leader in sustainability, policy, and strategy. As a former Deputy Secretary in the NSW Government, she led transformative shifts in environment, infrastructure, and renewable energy. With a Master's in Administrative Law and Policy from the University of Sydney, Alex combines practical expertise with academic insight. She currently drives change as the Director and Founder of Sustainable Solutions Advisory, a member of the UNSW Science Advisory Council, and a Non-Executive Director at St George Community Housing.

Critical thinking and problem solving as a key priority in the NPS

- Review the current context and landscape for problem-solving in the NPS

- Why problem-solving has been identified as a top skilling priority across all levels of the NPS

- How critical thinking provides the necessary lens to frame problems rationally and produce evidence-based solutions

- How problem-solving ability could drive your career advancement


Unpacking critical thinking techniques

- Exploring cognitive principles, tools and strategies such as whole-brain thinking and objectively collect and evaluate evidence

- Reviewing critical thinking tools and taking stock of our own limitations and strengths

- Delving into design thinking's collaborative process


Problem-solving methods and key tools

- Reviewing common problems and conducting root cause analysis

- Applying systems thinking to understand interdependencies and constraints

- Clarifying problems with process or mind maps

- Utilising creative problem-solving tools like abstract questioning, brainstorming and visualisation.


Working with others on problem-solving

- Facilitating a shared understanding of issues and problems 

- Prepare and present evidence-based arguments and solutions while testing new skills

- Resolving conflict and challenges in group problem solving

- Begin creating an action plan to implement post-training

Workshop

Definition: Understanding the problem

- Agreeing on the reality of the problem: Definition of key variables: known causal factors, structure, scope, stakeholder impact, interdependencies and constraints

- Evaluating problem impacts

- Consider solution criteria and problem-solving deliverables


Analysis: Identifying and evaluating possible solutions

- Evaluate solutions based on feasibility, impact and risk

- How to approach complex or ‘wicked problems’ (problems resistant to conventional resolution)

- Review tools, priorities and resources available (including expertise)


Implementation: Problem-solving in action

- View problem-solving as a systematic process and use critical thinking at each step:

- Analyse variables, identify root causes, and understand interdependencies

- Design possible solutions, explore opportunities, and consider different actions

- Decide on the implementation plan

- Monitor progress, learn from results, and evaluate effectiveness


Enhancing your critical thinking skills

- Wrap up discussion on key themes

- What will you do differently as a result of this program?

- Develop your action plan to implement on your return to work
